Tulip fields near Amsterdam at a glance

  • Where: the Bollenstreek around Lisse and Keukenhof, about 40 km from Amsterdam
  • Peak: mid-April to early May (check our live Flower Forecast)
  • Free to admire from public roads and paths, but never walk into a field
  • Best way to see them: by bike, or a guided or self-guided tour from Amsterdam
  • Find blooming fields: see exactly where on our weekly Flower Map

Beyond the gardens of Keukenhof, the real magic of Dutch spring is the open countryside: mile after mile of tulip fields glowing red, yellow and pink across the Bollenstreek. We live and work here and walk these fields every week, so this is our guide to seeing them at their best, and seeing them respectfully.

Tulip fields or Keukenhof: what’s the difference?

It helps to know the difference, because they’re two separate experiences:

  • Keukenhof is a curated garden with millions of bulbs planted by hand, designed shows and artworks. You need a ticket, and it’s open 18 March to 9 May 2027.
  • The tulip fields are open, working farmland where the bulbs are commercially grown. They’re free to admire from the roadside, they stretch across the whole region, and what’s blooming changes week by week.

Most visitors do both: Keukenhof for the designed displays, and the surrounding fields for that endless-colour landscape. Plan your Keukenhof visit »

Can I walk into the tulip fields?

The short answer: no. The fields are a farmer’s livelihood, grown for the bulb, not a public attraction. Walking in damages the crop, and it’s not allowed without the grower’s permission. Please enjoy and photograph the fields from the public roads and paths, and don’t pick the flowers.

Want that classic photo among the tulips? Head to a dedicated attraction or show garden where it’s allowed, such as Tulip Experience Amsterdam or The Tulip Barn. Respecting the fields keeps them beautiful for everyone, and it’s a big part of visiting the Bollenstreek the right way.

  • Guided or self-guided tour: by bike, electric Twizy, Land Rover or even helicopter.

Where exactly are the fields blooming?

The fields are concentrated in the Bollenstreek, around Lisse, Hillegom, Noordwijkerhout, De Zilk and Sassenheim. Because growers rotate where they plant and the bloom moves week by week, the best spots change all the time. We track them for you: see exactly which fields are in flower on our weekly Flower Map, and check the Flower Forecast for the current bloom status.

Photographing the tulip fields

A few tips from our own visits: the light is softest early morning and late afternoon; shoot along the rows from the path for that endless-colour effect; and remember the working landscape is part of the story (you may see growers topping the tulips or checking for disease, which is normal at the end of the bloom). Always stay on the path.
