Tulip season runs from about mid-March to mid-May. The exact peak shifts a week or two each year with the weather: a mild winter brings the bloom forward, a cold April holds it back. As a guide:

  • Late March: first colour with crocuses and daffodils; Keukenhof opens 18 March
  • Early–mid April: hyacinths and early tulips; fields starting to colour up
  • Mid–late April to early May: the open tulip fields at their best

How long does a tulip field stay in bloom?

An individual field is usually colourful for about one to two weeks before the flowers are topped (cut) so the bulb can grow. Because growers plant different fields and varieties that flower at different times, there is colour somewhere in the region throughout the season. That’s why we update our Flower Map every week, so you know which fields are blooming during your visit.

Where to see the best tulip fields

The largest concentration of tulip fields near Amsterdam is in the Bollenstreek, around Lisse, Hillegom, Noordwijkerhout and Sassenheim. The fields are free to admire from public roads and paths, but they are working farmland: please stay on the paths and don’t pick or trample the flowers. Want a photo among the tulips? Visit a dedicated attraction such as Tulip Experience Amsterdam or The Tulip Barn. See the tulip fields around Keukenhof »

Keukenhof Gardens

The highlight for most visitors is Keukenhof, the world’s largest tulip garden, open 18 March – 9 May 2027. The easiest way to visit from the city is a shuttle + Keukenhof combi-ticket, or the all-in Tulip Festival Card. Busy days sell out, so book ahead. Keukenhof 2027 tickets, dates and how to visit »

Where can you visit the most beautiful tulip fields in the Netherlands?

The most stunning tulip fields can be visited during the Tulip Festival Amsterdam, taking place in 2027 from March 18 to May 9. During this time, several tulip gardens are open to the public, including Keukenhof Gardens, the Tulip Experience, and the Tulip Barn. Visitors can also explore a tulip farm or join various sightseeing tours through the blooming tulip fields, which are primarily used for tulip bulb production.

The Flower Parade weekend (15–18 April 2027)

It’s free to watch from the roadside, and grandstand seats and tours sell out early. See Flower Parade tickets and tours »

Is the tulip originally from Holland?

Surprisingly, no. The tulip is not native to the Netherlands at all. Wild tulips grow in the mountains of Central Asia, and the flower was widely cultivated in the Ottoman Empire (modern-day Turkey) long before it reached Europe. Tulips arrived in the Low Countries in the late 16th century, and the botanist Carolus Clusius famously planted them in the Leiden botanical garden in 1593. They thrived in the sandy Dutch soil, became wildly fashionable, and during the 1630s sparked “Tulip Mania”, when single rare bulbs traded for the price of a house. Four centuries later the tulip is a Dutch icon, and the Bollenstreek is the heart of the world’s bulb industry.
